Suzhou Attractions

Suzhou is located in the south of Jiangsu province, some 50 miles west of Shanghai, along the old Grand Canal. The city has been famous for its gardens for many centuries. According to a Chinese proverb: “In heaven there is paradise, on earth there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.” Suzhou has also long been noted for its beautiful women. The city is dotted with lakes and ponds connected by a spider's web of canals. And all the canals are lined with whitewashed houses with gray-tiled roofs. Budget hotels in Suzhou offer a comfortable stay, and an opportunity to visit nearby tourist attractions.

HANSHAN TEMPLE

Hanshan Temple is located in Maple Bridge town in the west outskirts of Suzhou, only 1 kilometer west of the Lingering Garden. The temple is named after famous monk named Hanshan who lived here and was the temple's caretaker. The Bell Tower is an important component of the Hanshan Temple. The bell mentioned in Zhangji's poem has long been lost and the present one was made in 1906 during the Qing Dynasty.

HUMBLE ADMINISTRATOR'S GARDEN

Located in the northeastern part of Suzhou city, Humble Administrator's Garden, with a total area of 51,950 square miles, is the largest private garden in Suzhou, as well as one of the four most famous classic gardens in China. The middle part is the cream of the garden with marvelous mountains, clear water, exquisite buildings and exuberant trees and flower reminiscent of the scenery in the south of the lower Yangtze River.

LINGERING GARDEN

Covering an area of 23,310 square meters, the Lingering Garden is the best garden in Suzhou as well as being one of the four most famous gardens in China. It is renowned for the artistic way in which the spaces between various kinds of architectural forms are dealt with.

TIGER HILL

Tiger Hill, or Hu Qiu, a few miles northwest of the town, is very popular among visitors. It is supposedly the burial place of the King of Wu. The entrance gate resembles the mouth of a tiger, and the pagoda on the top of the hill its tail. There is also the burial of King of Wu on top of the hill. Although the hill is relatively small it has rich history.
